The venerable manufacturer was founded in 1853 in Hungary by Miklós Zsolnay. Zsolnay gained worldwide recognition after their works were displayed at several world fairs and a number of other international exhibitions in the late 1800's. In 1893 they began to produce ceramics that featured their now famous eosin iridescent glaze. The formula for this uniquely dazzling metallic glaze is still to this day a closely guarded secret. Zsolnay is also well known for having created pyrogranite, an exceptionally durable ornamental ceramic which was utilized by numerous top architects for a variety of now historical buildings in Europe.
