Lalique Crystal & Art GlassLalique is one of the world's preeminent crystal and art glass makers. The French art glass manufacturer is renowned worldwide for their intricately designed and exquisitely beautiful perfume bottles, figurines and statues. They are also quite well known for their alluring jewelry, vases, chandeliers and clocks. The world-famous glassmaking company was founded in the late 1800s by René Jules Lalique, a French glass artist who had studied his craft and honed his artistic skills at several prestigious schools - École des Arts Decoratifs and École Bernard Palissy in Paris and the Sydenham Art College in London. René Lalique is well known for employing a naturalistic style in his creations. His love for this artistic approach is attributed to his upbringing which included spending his summers in the idyllic French countryside. In his early years as an artist Lalique primarily worked as a jewelry designer. His immense talent and attention to detail quickly led to his receiving great acclaim as one of the premier French jewelry makers working in the Art Nouveau style. Word of his skills and talent spread and soon his works were known worldwide. As a result he began to be hailed as one of the world's top jewelry designers. Later in the 1920's his work with Art Deco style glassmaking cemented his status as one of the world's great glass and jewelry artists. Some of Lalique's most distinctive creations were his glass automobile hood ornaments or mascots that he designed in the 1920's. They included a base and wiring so that they could be automatically illuminated when the auto was accelerated. These striking glass mascots decorated some of the most exclusive luxury automobiles of the time such as Rolls-Royce, Bentley and Bugatti to name just a few prominent examples. Lalique hood ornaments and car mascots can command premium prices when found in good condition. Their uniqueness, scarcity and great beauty makes them quite popular with collectors today. René Lalique passed on in 1945 but his unique artistic vision lives on to this day. Now, over a century later, Lalique continues to create breathtaking works of art and their past and current creations are immensely popular with collectors.
