The History of Royal Copenhagen
Royal Copenhagen Porcelain was founded in 1775 by a chemist named Frantz Heinrich Müller after many years of experimenting to find a means of manufacturing high quality porcelain. As a trademark he adopted a symbol of 3 wavy lines. These 3 lines signified the three straits of Denmark: Store Baelt, Lille Baelt and Oresund. Like Meissen china, early pieces were painted cobalt blue before undergoing the glazing process. The reason for this color choice was that at the time cobalt blue was the only color which could withstand the high temperatures needed to fuse the porcelain and glaze together to create true china. Later when ways to utilize other colors were discovered, Royal Copenhagen still continued to produce china with its distinctive blue and white design.
Royal Copenhagen is not just famous for its fine china dinnerware. The company is also well known for its beautiful figurines and Christmas plates. The first Christmas plate was produced in 1895 and the tradition continues to this very day. Each year a new plate is created and only a limited quantity are produced. Their scarcity and beauty has caused them to become extremely collectible.
The high quality and great beauty of Royal Copenhagen porcelain has earned them an honored position in the porcelain world!
