Roseville Pottery
The Roseville Pottery Company was a highly regarded American pottery maker during the early 19th century to mid 20th century. Their designs were very popular and are currently highly sought after by collectors. Roseville produced many beautiful flower pots, vases, jardinieres and urns in a variety of patterns.
The history of the Roseville Pottery Company began with its foundation in 1890. In the beginning they produced ordinary pottery to be used around the home such as stoneware bowls and pots. In 1898 the company moved to Zanesville, Ohio and subsequently began to shift away from utilitarian pottery to art pottery. In 1900 they introduced the Rozane line (sometimes referred to as Rosane or Roszane). This line heralded a new age for Roseville and they continued to make beautiful and unique items until the mid 1950's when they ceased operation.
Identification and authentication of the earliest antique Roseville pottery can sometimes be difficult. One thing which helps is that the early pieces usually had marks on the bottom which consisted of the artist's initials. In 1931 they began to mark their pieces with their now famous cursive "Roseville" signature. This was later replaced by "Roseville U.S.A" which was used from that point forward.
