The History of Meissen Porcelain China
The history of Meissen porcelain begins in ancient China. For centuries the Chinese held the secret of creating porcelain. Around the end of the 13th century Chinese porcelain began to slowly appear in Europe. It created quite a stir and European craftsmen went to work trying to find the secret of how it was made. Centuries later in the early 1700's the secret of its manufacture was finally discovered. Two alchemists in Dresden working for King Augustus the Strong discovered the process by which it was made. Other craftsmen followed and made improvements to the process. The manufacture of European porcelain china began in 1710 at Albrechtsburg Castle in Meissen. This was the birth of Meissen porcelain china. Not long afterward the Meissen factory supervisor realized that a method needed to be found to protect Meissen china against forgeries or inferior imitations. He came up with the idea of painting a mark under the glaze to signify the authenticity of the china. He decided upon a marking made up of two crossed swords. This famous trademark is still used to this very day.
Meissen fine porcelain china dinnerware and figurines are extremely popular with collectors due to their beauty and quality. For centuries Meissen has stood as a benchmark for other fine china makers to follow!
