Dale Chihuly Art Glass
Dale Chihuly is renowned the world over for his uniquely beautiful glass sculptures and other artistic works. His groundbreaking creative vision and revolutionary team based approach to the art glass manufacturing process has resulted in some of the world's most innovative and original art glass creations. Chihuly glass is greatly admired for its exquisite beauty and unique artistic aesthetic.
Dale Chihuly began studying glassblowing in the mid 1960's and by 1967 he was creating room-sized installations of art glass sculpture. He is largely responsible for establishing the blown glass art form as an accepted form of installation art as well as environmental art.
After losing the vision in his left eye in a 1976 auto accident, Chihuly gave up his duties as chief glassblower at his studio. Because of the loss of depth perception he could no longer perform the art of glass blowing. He began to direct other glassblowers who created art glass sculptures according to his exact instructions.
Dale Chihuly's studio is famous not only for their beautiful sculptures, bowls and baskets but their massive and absolutely dazzling chandeliers as well. A stunning example can be seen in the photo to the right.
One of Chihuly's most famous undertakings was the Bridge of Glass, a breathtakingly beautiful 500 foot pedestrian bridge which links downtown Tacoma, Washington to the city's waterfront. This majestic achievement was a collaboration between Chihuly and noted architect, Arthur Andersson. The ceiling of the bridge is fashioned from over 2000 glass objects from Chihuly's Seaform and Persian series.
Many of Dale Chihuly's complex multi-piece glass sculptures and chandeliers have been exhibited worldwide to great public acclaim. Chihuly glass art can be found in the permanent collections of numerous prestigious museums and galleries all over the world including the Corning Museum of Glass, the Toledo Museum of Art, the Singapore Art Museum, and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. Additionally Dale Chihuly is in truly rare company as he is one of only three living American artists that have had the honor of a solo exhibition at the Louvre in Paris.
