The skilled glassmakers of Murano, Italy have been at the forefront of glassmaking for many centuries. The rich and storied history of Murano glass traces back to 1291 when the Venetian Republic, fearful of the possibility of local glass makers setting fire to Venice's wood buildings, forced them to move to the island of Murano, located just off the shores of Venice.
