Murano Glass
The glassmakers of Murano, Italy have been at the forefront of glassmaking for many centuries. The history of Murano glass began in 1291 when the Venetian Republic, fearful of local glass makers setting fire to Venice's wood buildings, forced them to move to the island of Murano, located just off the shores of Venice. Their skills soon gained wide acclaim and by the 14th century they were treated like royalty. They were given the right to carry swords and were also granted immunity from prosecution.
Since this time generations of Murano glassmakers have continued to employ a number of advanced techniques to produce art glass of the highest caliber. Murano art glass creations are renowned for their stunning beauty and are highly desired by collectors all over the world.
Murano glass has been produced in a variety of beautiful forms over the years. Some classical examples include perfume bottles, vases, lamps and millefiori paperweights. Some more modern items are Murano glass jewelry and glass beads. Another recent usage of this glass is in Murano glass clocks which have proven to be quite popular with homeowners and decorators.
