Royal Doulton Toby Jugs & Character JugsSome of Royal Doulton's most unique creations are their Toby and character jugs or mugs. They're quite distinctive and when you see one there's no mistaking what it is. These two items are occasionally confused with each other but they are actually very different. Toby jugs are models of the entire body while character jugs are models of just the head and shoulders. Doulton (the company's name wasn't changed to Royal Doulton until 1901) produced Toby mugs beginning in the mid 1800's. The character mug was actually a later innovation that was created by Charles Noke, an artist at Doulton. He envisioned a jug that featured just the character's head and shoulders as opposed to their entire body. In addition Noke wanted them to be more colorful and distinctive. He also proposed that they should be based on popular characters from English history, stories and music. The first character mug was introduced in 1934 and they've been quite popular with collectors ever since.
