Many Lladro collectors aren’t aware that in addition to porcelain figurines and other collectibles that Lladro has produced some rather unique and beautiful chess sets. Several different styles and designs were issued starting in the early 1970’s and continuing into more recent years. The earliest example of a Lladro procelain chess set was #01004833 which was originally issued in 1972 and retired in 1985. It was designed by Lladro sculptor, Julio Fernandez.
However the most famous of the small handful of different styles of chess playing pieces are Lladro’s medieval chess sets which were designed by master sculptor Juan Ignacio Aliena. In 2009, in response to popular demand, Lladro issued a reproduction of one of these sets – their classic #01006333 Medieval Chess Set which was originally produced in the 80’s. This remake was numbered #01007138 and it was also designed by Juan Ignacio Aliena.
Lladro’s chess sets are typically rather hard to find and thus generally command premium prices. For serious Lladro collectors they are well worth watching out for on the secondary market. Be sure to check back here often for the best selection and prices.
