Dominick Labino is considered to be one of the most important figures in American studio art glass. Working in the early 1960s in conjunction with Harvey Littleton, another principal figure in the fledgling movement, he helped establish the viability of studio glass. Utilizing his groundbreaking techniques and innovations in glassmaking technologies small glass studios suddenly found themselves empowered with the capability to produce fine art glass in their own studios as opposed to having to work with large industrial glass manufacturers. Their creativity unleashed, Labino’s invaluable contributions to the field helped herald in a new era in the world of art glass.
In addition to being one of the progenitors of the American art glass movement Dominick Labino was also an internationally known scientist with hundreds of U.S. and international patents in the field of glass technologies. Additionally his knowledge proved instrumental in the U.S. space program, specifically the Apollo and Gemini missions.
Labino’s works are on display in numerous prestigious museum collections including the Corning Museum of Glass, the Smithsonian Institution, the Pilkington Glass Museum, and the Chrysler Museum of Art to name just a few prominent examples.
